Fast Facts

  • BIFF 2009 featured 65 films from 29 countries.

  • We offer four prizes: Best Narrative Feature, Best Documentary, the Bermuda Shorts Award, while our filmgoers vote for the Audience Choice Award.

  • We screen features, documentaries and shorts in competition. We also screen in the following categories: World Cinema Showcase, Opening Night and Closing Night, BIFF Kids children’s films, a Sidebar highlighting modern cinema from a leading filmmaking country, Special Presentations, Midnight Madness films, and a Short Series.

  • We screen films at three venues in Hamilton, Liberty Theatre, Speciality Cinema and BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, and one venue in St. George’s, Southside Cinema.

  • Our International Advisory Board, set up in 2001, includes Tom Bernard (Co-President and Co-Founder, Sony Pictures Classics), David Poland (thehotbutton.com), moviecitynews.com), Nick Roddick (formerly an editor of Screen International, currently runs Split Screen and is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound and the Evening Standard); and Alison Swan (director and screenwriter, she has directed television for Nickelodeon and written screenplays for Twentieth Century Fox and Showtime and, most recently, the feature film Nothing Like the Holidays.)

  • Our Chats With… seminars take place a lunchtimes at the Bermuda Society of Arts, City Hall, Church Street, Hamilton.  All are invited.

  • BIFF is a registered charity.

  • We have a full-time director and many, many hardworking volunteers who play a huge role in the success of our festival.

  • Our festival receives funding through corporate sponsorships, in-kind gifts and via fundraising events and ticket and merchandise sales.

  • We are a Qualifying Festival for the Short Film Academy Award®.

  • Our BIFF Film Academy comprises: a school screening programme during the March festival for senior secondary schools and a school screening programme in October for nursery, primary and middle schools; film production summer camps for kids 7-16; and, Filmmaking Labs for college age students and adults.

  • We also hold a monthly Film Series.
