BIFF Kids Fourth Annual Education Programmes

The Bermuda International Film Festival is proud to present educational programmes for Pre-K, Primary, and Secondary students on Thursday October 16 and Friday October 17.

Bermudian actor Rajai Denbrook will introduce the films and lead discussions. Teaching materials to help integrate these films into your classroom have been prepared and are available on our website.

Pre-K/K programme: What happens when someone walks away with your picnic? Who plays in an orchestra? These and other questions are answered in fun short films that touch on seasons and nature, friendship, music, sharing, counting and helping others. Children will experience a variety of animation styles, as well as rhyming prose.

Primary School programme: The Books to Film series is back. This time the books are: Roberto the Insect Architect (about a termite following his dreams); Chrysanthemum (about a girl mouse struggling to ‘fit in’ at school); and, Yo! Yes? (about two lonely boys brought together through a simple greeting). Themes include pursuing one’s dreams, self-esteem, confidence, friendship, sensitivity and emotional development. The books and films have distinctive verbal and visual styles.

Secondary School programme: McLibel, an absorbing documentary, recounts the tale of a gardener and postman who took on McDonald’s. McDonald’s used the UK libel laws to sue Helen and Dave over a leaflet. During the trial every aspect of the corporation’s business was examined: from junk food and ‘McJobs,’ to animal cruelty, environmental damage and advertising to children. Helen and Dave’s triumph – years later – will make you look at fast food differently. Themes include human rights, freedom of speech, multinational business practices, food industry practices and role of the media. (Film suitable for students over 15 years old.) Filmmaker, Franny Armstrong, will be available via conference call for a Q&A session after the film.
