African Cinema: Which Way?

Tuesday, 22 March

Prof. Niyi Coker, University of Missouri – St. Louis, joined by filmmakers participating in the Africa World Documentary Film Festival, will discuss the state of African Cinema today. Africa is a continent that struggled to define its true history and cultural heritage – a consequence of its serial colonisation by several European nations.  Early indigenous African filmmakers debated the subject of true African identity in the shadows of a colonial experience. Indeed African cinema has struggled with this over the past sixty years.  Added to this burden is the dilemma of:  “to make the African films in the European language of the colonizers or to make them in indigenous African languages with European subtitles?”  While the answer to this question is tied largely to the issue of financing and distribution, a major hurdle for African filmmakers remains the humanizing of the African--- the African as total subject.
